FREE Salt Lake City Holiday Events

asd

Most of us dig deep into our pockets during the holiday season - for gifts, dining out, and entertainment - but holiday cheer doesn't have to be expensive. There are lots of free holiday events and activities in the Salt Lake area that will bring joy to the season without breaking the bank.

1. Christmas Concerts on Temple Square

Christmas concerts on Temple Square and nearby locations begin with "Ringing in the Season" Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle and continue almost nightly until New Year's Eve. Some events require tickets obtained in advance; others do not require a ticket. Most events are free, but "Savior of the World," performed in the LDS Conference Center, is $8 for evening performances and $5 for matinees.

2. Downtown Holiday Lights

The lights at Temple Square and at the Gallivan Center are one of Salt Lake City's best holiday traditions. It's a great way to squeeze in a little extra exercise and spend time with the family, and best of all, it's free!

Temple Square and downtown SLC are lit with more than a million lights, going from the Gateway to Temple Square, down Main Street to the Gallivan Center, and along Broadway Boulevard. There are three old-fashioned holiday window displays at the new 222 South Main high-rise, reminiscent of the old ZCMI window displays.

Click here for more information about the downtown holiday lights.

Nov. 25-Dec. 31, 2011, dusk-10 p.m.

Tips: The downtown holiday lights are amazing, but so are the crowds. If you have a small group, try taking TRAX downtown, or if you have a larger group, it might be more economical to park at one of the pay lots near the EnergySolutions Arena. If you can, go during the week on a night when there's no Jazz game. Downtown restaurants will be crowded, so call ahead. Dress warmly.

3. Holiday Celebrations at Thanksgiving Point

Free activities at Thanksgiving Point include live reindeer on the plaza and ice sculpting demonstrations.
