Color Your Palate, Week 2

Goodbye food pyramid—hello plate!

Just this summer, we said good-bye to an old piece of history as the old food pyramid icon was replaced. So what moved in? Why, the dinner plate of course! This new icon developed by the USDA makes it simple by showing us all to fill half our plate with fruits and vegetables for every meal.

In addition to half your plate being fruits and veggies, it also encourages us to downsize our meat and starchy grains, some-thing that for so long has been the focal point for many meals.

Why change?

Making half your plate fruits and vegetables not only helps us to reach the recommended amount each day, but it lessens the frustration of having to figure out what a proper serving size is all the time. No more head-aches about cup measurements and tablespoons! Not to mention, the new icon encourages us all to get back to eating dinner together and around the dinner table.

The change to My Plate also supports the message: “Fruits and Veggies—More Matters,” the campaign to encourage us all to add more to our plates. Eating more fruits and veggies makes a big difference in our health and gives us the energy we need to live an active life—so more DOES matter!

Week 2's Color you Palate challenge:

This week, to celebrate the new USDA icon, make fruits and veggies half your plate for at least one meal each day. Try for three meals a day if you can! We’ve learned why eating more fruits and vegetables are great for our health so get creative and add more of these foods to your plate.
